today as it begins an in‑absentia hearing against one of the world’s most wanted fugitives—Joseph Kony.
Today, Tuesday 9th September, the ICC opens the first-ever confirmation of charges hearing in the absence of the accused.
Joseph Kony, the leader of the brutal Lord’s Resistance Army, remains at large—but justice presses on.
Held in The Hague, the hearing will allow ICC prosecutors to present evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed during Kony’s reign of terror in northern Uganda.
Although this is not a trial, judges will decide whether there’s enough evidence to move forward.
In June, the ICC’s Appeals Chamber approved the use of in-absentia proceedings when a suspect cannot be located.
With legal counsel appointed for Kony, the process could pave the way for a full trial—if and when he is ever captured.
