UPC Leaders in Greater North Protest EC Move Blocking Akena’s Nomination.

Leaders of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) from the greater north have condemned the Electoral Commission for blocking their party president, Hon. Jimmy Akena, from being nominated as a presidential candidate in the 2026 elections.

In a joint press conference that took place in Lira city, the party and supporters have annonomiatly agreed not to give any votes to any candidate at all level if Jimmy James Akena Obote is not on the ballot paper.

The Regional UPC Vice chairperson for Lango, Chris Ongom, said the party had collected all required signatures and fulfilled the nomination guidelines, questioning why Akena was singled out while other candidates were cleared without objection.

Ongom told a reporter that blocking Akena not to be among candidates is a sign of undermining the rights of Uganda citizens since many of the Ugandas have shown their support to Akena.

He therefore assured the citizens to boycott all the voting since upc has no presidential candidate for general for 2026-2031.

The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) leader’s from the greater north have condemned the Electoral Commission for blocking their party president, Hon. Jimmy Akena, from being nominated as a presidential candidate in the 2026 elections.

“We are unhappy and we don’t support this. We call upon the Electoral Commission to make a U-turn and ensure our party president, Hon. Jimmy Akena is nominated without delay,” Ongom told journalists.

The party is now demanding for an immediate reversal of the Commission’s decision
to recognize Hon Jimmy Akena as the legitimate UPC party president that will lead to its presidential candidate, writing a formal apology to UPC and its supporters.

Ongom also said they are demanding immediate nomination of Akena as a presidential candidate.

Youth and women representatives from different regions also spoke out strongly, vowing to mobilize peaceful demonstrations and three days of nationwide prayers and fasting from September 29 to October 1.

The youth leaders said Akena represents hope for the young generation, while women leaders declared they would intensify their protests if the party president is not nominated.
