Sororit,Uganda|Clinison Medical Centre has launched a major eye screening drive aimed at preventing vision impairment in Eastern Uganda, with a goal to screen at least 10,000 people by 2030.
The launch took place on 27-9-2025 at the facility premises in Owalei, Opuyo, Soroti City, under the theme “Protect Your Sight, Test Regularly.”
Dr. Jane Agwaru Clinison CEO told a reporter the importance of proactive eye care, noting that many people only seek treatment once symptoms appear, often too late.
She highlighted that over 1.4 million Ugandans live with preventable vision impairment or blindness caused by conditions such as cataracts.
Dr. Agwaru also outlined partnerships with transport companies to test drivers’ eyesight, pointing out that poor vision is a major factor in road accidents.
The facility plans to offer full eye examinations, including visual field tests, to drivers from Kakise, YY Bus Companies, and other transport service providers on the Soroti route.
She encouraged the community to embrace the initiative and make regular eye checks part of their healthcare routine.
Soroti City Health Officer Dr. Alfred Anyonga, commended Clinison for its dedication to improving community health, praising its professionalism, accurate reporting, and complementary role in maternal and child healthcare.
He urged the Ministry of Health to continue supporting the centre, noting that its services extend beyond eye care to include child vaccinations, maternity, and antenatal services.
Soroti District Health Inspector, Ekodeu Emmanuel, welcomed the program, noting that residents previously had to travel long distances for eye care services, and described the initiative as a major benefit for the Teso region.
The eye screening campaign reinforces Clinison Medical Centre’s commitment to reducing preventable vision impairment while complementing government efforts in maternal health, immunization, and broader public health services across Eastern Uganda.
