MITYANA, UGANDA –The political temperature in central Uganda soared today as Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader popularly known as Bobi Wine, brought his nationwide “People’s Freedom Tour” to a charged rally in Mityana Municipality.
The event, which drew tens of thousands of supporters from Mityana and neighboring districts, was a stark display of both unwavering popular support and the continued tense relationship between the opposition and the state.
From the early morning, the streets of Mityana were a flood of the NUP’s signature red color. Supporters, young and old, marched towards the main grounds, singing revolutionary songs and chanting “People Power, Our Power.” The atmosphere was described as a mixture of a carnival and a political protest, with vendors doing a brisk trade in red berets, flags, and t-shirts bearing Bobi Wine’s image.
“This is not just a rally; it is a census,” said Annet Nalwoga, a 28-year-old market vendor who traveled from Kassanda. “We are here to show the world that our spirit is not broken. 2026 is our time to change the leadership of this country through the ballot.”
The massive turnout was matched by a significant and visible security deployment. Police and military patrols were stationed at every major junction leading to the venue. Anti-riot police with water cannons and military-grade trucks created a perimeter around the rally grounds, a move criticized by NUP officials as “intimidation tactics.”
There were brief, tense scuffles as security personnel attempted to block several convoys of supporters from entering the town. LCC TV Reporters on the ground reported at least five arbitrary arrests of individuals accused of “inciting violence,” though they were reportedly released hours later.
When Bobi Wine took the stage, his speech lasted nearly an hour and centered on several key themes:He formally declared the “Freedom Tour” as the official launch of NUP’s grassroots campaign for the next general elections. “The regime thinks we are tired. They think we have forgotten the stolen victory of the past. But today, we tell them, we are more organized, more determined, and more focused than ever before,” he declared to roaring applause.
He heavily criticized the government’s handling of the economy, citing the rising cost of living, youth unemployment, and what he called “crippling” taxes. “While they are building palaces, you are struggling to buy sugar and paraffin. This tour is about reclaiming what is rightfully yours,” he stated.
Bobi Wine repeatedly urged his supporters to be ready to “protect their vote” in 2026, alleging that past elections were marred by widespread rigging and violence. He announced plans for a new citizen-led parallel vote tallying system.
A source within the Office of the President, speaking on condition of anonymity, dismissed the rally as “the same old rhetoric from a group that offers no viable solutions, only populist complaints. “The 2025 political season is starting with a clear message: the opposition is not going away, and the road to 2026 will be intensely contested.”
