Uganda is bracing for a surge in cybersecurity threats as the country approaches the 2026 elections.
With 23 million internet users, representing 48% of the population, the risk of cyber attacks is high, particularly given the country’s experience of losing UGX 72 billion to cyber threats and fraud in 2024.
The Ministry of ICT & National Guidance, Echo Uganda, Liquid Intelligent Technologies, Momo Uganda, and Milima Security are conducting campaigns to equip individuals and businesses with knowledge and skills to protect their data and systems.
Among the cyber threats identified are;
1- Phishing and Ransomware: These are among the key threats identified by Brigadier Rapula Mosito, Section Head of Cybercrime Investigation at the HAWKS.
2- Malware and Identity Theft: Other significant threats include malware, identity theft, online child exploitation, and personal data theft.
3- Small and Medium-Sized Businesses: 40% of these businesses have experienced some form of cyber attack, according to a report by NITA Uganda.This has prompted uganda to do a nationwide Sensitization Campaigns through:
1- Cyber Security Awareness Month: Uganda has launched Cyber Security Awareness Month in October, highlighting its commitment to addressing the growing threat of cybercrime.
2- Partnerships and Collaborations: The government is working with stakeholders across law enforcement, civil society, and the private sector to strengthen cybersecurity.3-Robust Cybersecurity Measures: Individuals and businesses should implement robust cybersecurity measures, including strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and regular software updates.
4-Digital Literacy: Improving digital literacy and awareness about cybersecurity best practices is crucial in preventing cyber attacks.
5-Collaboration and Information Sharing: Stakeholders should collaborate and share information to stay ahead of emerging threats and protect critical infrastructure.
