NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto has issued a robust defense of regional infrastructure projects, specifically the planned Uganda Oil Pipeline, while bluntly dismissing critics of the cooperation between Kenya and Uganda.
“Uganda is assured of access to the sea through Kenya, and that’s why we’re not only extending the pipeline, we’re also extending the road and railway because we believe this region needs to move as one. For those who want to engage us in negative talk, please give us a break. We do not have time for negative talk,” Kenya President William Ruto stated. The President’s comments came during a public address today, where he emphasized the strategic importance of regional integration for economic growth.
His remarks underscore Kenya’s commitment to positioning itself as a key trade and logistics gateway for its landlocked neighbors, including Uganda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
However, it was his direct message to detractors that captured significant attention. In a firm tone, he added, “For those who want to engage us in negative talk, please give us a break. We do not have time for negative talk.”
This statement is seen as a response to various criticisms, which have included concerns over the pipeline’s environmental impact, its financial viability, and political disagreements between the two nations that have occasionally threatened the project’s progress.
President Ruto’s administration has championed the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) as a transformative project that will create jobs, boost government revenues, and solidify regional ties. By linking the pipeline to broader road and railway extensions, the President framed it as part of a larger vision for a unified East African community.
Analysts suggest that this strong public reaffirmation is aimed at reassuring investors and regional partners of Kenya’s dedication to seeing the project through, despite any opposing voices.
