Betty Amongi Akena, Minister of Gender, Labor, and Social Development, as she launched a landmark football tournament “Betty Amongi Christmas Cup” aimed at weaving the threads of peace and unity among the city’s youth.
Amidst cheers and the vibrant display of team jerseys, Minister Amongi addressed a captivated audience, framing the tournament as a strategic intervention for social development. “We are here to kick off more than just a football,” she declared, her voice resonating with conviction. “We are kicking off a movement—a movement that says ‘no’ to idleness and ‘yes’ to opportunity; ‘no’ to division and ‘yes’ to a collective goal for a peaceful Lira.”
The initiative, which will see teams from across the city’s divisions compete, is designed to be a proactive measure against youth restiveness. It seeks to channel the immense energy and passion of young people towards a positive and unifying endeavor.
“For a long time, we have talked about the challenges facing our youth. Today, we are presenting a solution on the football pitch,” said one of the local councilors present. “When a young person is focused on training and representing their community, they are building a future, not destroying it.”
