Uganda Releases 2025 Primary Leaving Examination Results Amid Record Pass Rates and Equity Concerns

The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has today, January 29, 2026, released the results of the 2025 Primary Leaving Examinations, revealing a significant increase in overall pass rates but highlighting persistent performance gaps between urban and rural schools. Education Minister Janet Museveni, alongside UNEB Chairperson Prof. Celestino Obua, announced that 94.2% of candidates qualified for the post-primary level, the highest percentage in a decade.

  1. Results Release Event

    • The results were officially unveiled at State House Nakasero at 10:00 AM EAT.

    • UNEB reported a 4.3% increase in Division 1 and 2 passes compared to 2024.

    • Total candidature: 749,000 pupils, a slight rise from last year.

  2. Gender Performance

    • Girls outperformed boys in English and Social Studies, while boys led in Mathematics and Science.

    • Overall, more girls (96%) qualified for senior secondary than boys (92.5%).

  3. Equity and Accessibility Issues

    • Minister highlighted concerns over poor performance in hard-to-reach districts (especially Karamoja and parts of West Nile).

    • 35 schools under investigation for suspected malpractice; results withheld pending hearings.

  4. New Government Policy Announcement

    • Starting 2026, all PLE registration will be fully digital via the UNEB e-portal to curb ghost candidates and late registration.

    • Special needs candidates: 3,472 sat with tailored support; performance improved by 7% over last year.

  5. Top Performing Schools

    • Traditional elite schools in Kampala, Wakiso, and Mbale dominate Division 1 rankings.

    • UNEB praised 10 rural schools in Nakaseke and Kisoro for exceptional performance despite resource challenges.

  6. Next Steps

    • Results slips available to headteachers via UNEB portals from today.

    • Parents can SMS candidate index number to 6600 for instant results (fee: 500 UGX).

    • Selection for Senior One under the Universal Secondary Education program begins February 5.

PLE is Uganda’s final primary school assessment, taken at the end of Primary Seven. It determines placement in secondary education. The exam covers Mathematics, English, Social Studies, and Science.
