Oyam,UGANDA|The meeting held by district leaders of Oyam to adress dispute over land for location of Iceme headquarters ended in chaos as councillors and locals failed to agree.
The meeting came after the LC3 chairperson of Iceme subcounty, Nicholas Opio Awelo recently announced that the executive committee have resolved to transfer the location of headquarters from Dele in Awungu parish to OkicĀ in Omolo parish.
A section of councillors and the speaker of Iceme subcounty, Tom Richard Odwar disagreed with the move arguing that the council in 2021 resolved that the headquarters be relocated to Dele.
The meeting ended in tension as the locals and some councillors failed to resolve where the headquarters should be relocated.
Joel Atine, the former Sub County Assistant Secretary of Iceme, blamed the Sub County Chairman for opposing the purchase of land at Dele Trading Centre, which has caused ongoing tension and confusion among councillors.
The LC3 Chairperson Iceme subcounty, Nicholas Opio Awelo accused some councillors and technical staff of prioritizing personal interests over community needs because the land in Dele is less than 2 acres which can’t accommodate the headquarters because it needs over 5 acres of land.
Meanwhile, the speaker of Iceme subcounty, Tom Richard Odwar left the meeting early and efforts to get his comments on phone was futile by press time because his known phone number was not available.
Oyam District Chairman, Benson Dilla Oyuku cautioned Iceme councillors not to involve him in their internal disputes, warning that such quarrels could affect his political support.
He urged the leaders to remain united and resolve the matter by October this year for proper planning.
Joel Ojedra, the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of Oyam District, has warned leaders in Iceme Sub County to stop internal conflicts if they want to benefit from government development, including the construction of a new Sub County headquarters.
