Awei Sub-County Distributes 49 Desks to Boost Primary School Infrastructure

ALEBTONG, Uganda — Awei Sub-County in Alebtong District has distributed 49 new desks to government primary schools in a targeted effort to improve the local learning environment and alleviate chronic classroom furniture shortages.

The procurement was funded through an 8 million UGX allocation from the sub-county's 2025/2026 financial year budget.

Targeted Distribution Across Local Schools

Speaking during the official handover ceremony, Awei Sub-County LCIII Chairperson Sam Oyena Obonyo noted that each desk was procured at UGX 170,000, a figure that includes transportation costs.

"Education remains one of the sub-county's top priorities. These desks will improve classroom conditions and enhance learning for pupils across our government primary schools," Oyena Obonyo said.

While acknowledging that the 49 desks are insufficient to completely resolve the deficit, Obonyo explained that the allocation was distributed based on critical need, with targeted schools receiving between six and seven desks each.

Recipient institutions across the sub-county include:

• Te-Ongora Primary School

• Owalo Primary School

• Adayang-Lim Primary School

• Ojul Primary School

• Te-Olwedo Primary School

Call for Maintenance and Broader Support

Awei Sub-County Executive Committee Member Katherine Akello Owiny welcomed the delivery as a timely intervention, while reiterating the ongoing demand for infrastructure support.

She urged headteachers, school administrators, and students to take ownership of the new furniture to ensure its longevity.

"Investing in schools is key to improving academic performance and the future of children in Awei Sub-County," Akello stated, emphasizing the need for proper maintenance so the desks serve learners for years to come.

Broader Development Goals

Looking ahead, Chairperson Oyena Obonyo pledged that the sub-county leadership will continue lobbying for additional resources to reach every school in the area. However, he emphasized that local revenue streams alone cannot fully cover the region's expanding requirements.

He appealed directly to Alebtong District officials and development partners to step in with supplementary funding—noting that alongside education, Awei Sub-County is simultaneously working to fund essential services in healthcare, road infrastructure, and community development.
