Residents Torch Suspected Livestock Theft Vehicle as Police Arrest Four in Kwania

KWANIA, Uganda – Tensions escalated in Bung village, Teduka Ward, Aduku Town Council, Kwania District, on Thursday, August 13, 2026, when residents set fire to a Toyota Noah vehicle suspected of being used to transport stolen livestock. Police have since arrested four individuals in connection with the alleged theft.

According to Moses Amwata, the Bung LC1 Chairperson, residents became suspicious after noticing the vehicle, registration number UAP 736K, parked in the area. Upon closer inspection, they discovered livestock inside, which they believed had been stolen. The situation rapidly deteriorated, with angry residents setting the vehicle ablaze and reducing it to ashes.

Lucy Achato, a resident and livestock owner, expressed that the alleged theft provoked strong reactions among community members, who felt compelled to intervene after growing suspicious of both the animals and the vehicle.

Dorcus Wangari, the Aduku Town Council Councillor, confirmed that she received a report from the Gender and Integrated Security Office (GISO) and later visited the scene to assess the situation. She urged residents to refrain from transporting livestock at night without proper documentation, emphasizing that buyers should always carry proof of ownership and legal purchase receipts.

"People should not move livestock at night without documents showing that they legally bought the animals," Wangari stated.

Kwania District Police Commander, SP Kadoogo Paul, confirmed that police received a report regarding the incident and promptly intervened. The driver and three other occupants of the vehicle were arrested at the scene. Those in custody include Emmanuel Opio, a resident of Adyeda Trading Centre in Teduka Ward; Opio Ashan, also known as Murefo, from Bala Town Council; and two others identified only as Okello and Walter, both reportedly residents of Lira City.

Geoffrey Okello, the GISO of Aduku Town Council, noted that preliminary investigations suggest some of the livestock involved may have originated from Bala in Kole District and Akalo, among other areas.

Police have launched formal investigations to determine the ownership of the livestock, establish how the animals were obtained, and ascertain whether the suspects are linked to a broader pattern of livestock theft in the region.

The incident has reignited concerns over rising community vigilante actions in response to livestock theft. Authorities are appealing to the public to report suspected criminal activity to law enforcement rather than taking matters into their own hands.

Police are also expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the burning of the vehicle and determine whether further legal action will be taken against those responsible for the arson.
