LIRA, Uganda – In a decisive move to quell rising insecurity and substance abuse, the North Kyoga Region Police Force has arrested 34 suspects during coordinated night operations conducted over the weekend. The crackdown, which took place on the night of Saturday, July 5, 2026, targeted notorious hotspots for robbery, theft, assault, and the illicit drug trade.

The operations were carried out simultaneously in two major areas. In Lira City East Division, a tactical raid led by the Division Police Commander focused on the volatile Uhuru Bar and Angwet-angwet areas, resulting in the apprehension of 26 individuals. Concurrently, in a separate operation in Oyam District, authorities arrested 8 suspects in Kamdini Town Council.

According to the North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the operations were a direct response to an escalation in criminal complaints from residents. "The operation was prompted by rising reports of robbery, theft, assault, and the rampant abuse of illicit drugs in the division," SP Okema stated during a press briefing held on Monday.

SP Okema assured the public that the legal process would proceed swiftly, with all suspects expected to be presented before the courts within one to two days. "This is aimed at reducing the fear and insecurity caused by these individuals," he added. "Lira City Police are determined to arrest and prosecute those causing insecurity in the communities."

In Oyam, preliminary reports indicate that the arrested group was similarly involved in robbery, theft, and the abuse of illicit substances within the Kamdini Town Council area.

Police leadership has vowed that these operations are not an isolated event but the beginning of a sustained campaign to restore public order. "Similar operations will continue across the North Kyoga Region to ensure the safety and security of all residents," SP Okema confirmed.

The public is encouraged to continue cooperating with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities as the police intensify their efforts to rid the region of criminal elements.
