DWOG PACU CUP KICKS OFF TODAY WITH TITLE HOLDERS KYOGA FACING ERUTE SOUTH IN THRILLING OPENER

LIRA, UGANDA – The much-anticipated Dwog Pacu Cup officially commences today at the UTC-Lira playground, with defending champions Kioga Constituency set to lock horns with Erute South in what promises to be a captivating opening fixture of the 2026 season.

The community football extravaganza, whose name translates from Luo to mean "Come Back Home," has rapidly established itself as a cornerstone of grassroots sports development and unity across the Lango sub-region.

Kioga Constituency, representing Amolatar District, enter today's clash as the team to beat after their imperious run in the maiden edition, which culminated in a resounding 3-0 victory over Lira City West in the final on August 3, 2025. The defending champions posted an unblemished record throughout the tournament, dispatching Dokolo North 1-0 in the semi-finals before their dominant title-winning performance.

The 2025 final proved to be a masterclass in clinical finishing, with Eling Andrew breaking the deadlock in the 26th minute before Denis Eporo doubled the advantage on the hour mark. Substitute Dickens Okwirq Diara sealed the emphatic victory in the 74th minute, remarkably extending Kioga's lead even after the champions were reduced to ten men.

Erute South, who finished fourth in the previous edition, will be desperate to engineer an upset and signal their title ambitions from the outset. The runners-up mantle belonged to Lira City West, who secured their place in the final with a dramatic 2-1 triumph over Erute North.

The tournament's prize structure underscores the growing investment in regional football, with champions Kioga receiving UGX 5 million alongside the coveted trophy, while runners-up Lira City West pocketed UGX 3 million and silver medals. Individual accolades were shared among the region's outstanding talents, with Lira City West's Maduka Innocent claiming the Most Valuable Player award following his remarkable contribution of eight assists and two goals. Apac Municipality's Denis Otim finished as top scorer with eight goals, while Rev Jimmy Max Ajon of Kioga was recognised as Best Coach.

The 2025 edition attracted 13 teams from across the Lango region, including Kioga County, Lira City East and West, Dokolo North and South, Alebtong, Moroto, Otuke East and West, Erute North and South, and Oyam North and South. The competition format featured group stages, quarter-finals, and knockouts before the Lira City finale.

Beyond the on-pitch action, organisers have demonstrated a commendable commitment to environmental stewardship through the "Plant More Trees" campaign, which saw Man of the Match recipients receive tree seedlings as part of the tournament's broader community impact initiative.

With defending champions Kioga seeking to assert their dominance from the first whistle and Erute South aiming to dismantle that narrative, today's curtain-raiser promises to set the tone for what is shaping up to be another fiercely contested edition of the Dwog Pacu Cup.
