Lira University Welcomes Over 1,000 Freshers, Champions Skills Training and Responsible Leadership
Lira University has admitted over 1,000 new students for the 2026/2027 academic year. University leadership, including the Vice Chancellor and the Lira City Resident Commissioner, urged the freshers to prioritize practical skills, responsible citizenship, and community problem-solving. Officials also commended government support for infrastructure growth, as the institution continues to record rising student enrolment.

LIRA CITY, Uganda – Lira University has officially welcomed more than 1,000 newly admitted students for the 2026/2027 academic year, with university leadership emphasizing the importance of practical skill acquisition and responsible citizenship in driving regional and national development.
During the orientation activities, the Vice Chancellor of Lira University, Prof. Jaspher Watson Ogwal Okeng, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically proficient but also self-reliant and capable of making meaningful contributions to society.
“We are dedicated to molding graduates who can stand on their own and actively participate in the development of our nation,” said Prof. Ogwal Okeng. He encouraged the freshers to look beyond theoretical knowledge and instead focus on developing hands-on skills that are directly applicable in the workplace and in community settings.
Prof. Ogwal Okeng also extended his appreciation to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his continued support toward the university’s growth, particularly in infrastructure development. He noted that these investments have significantly enhanced the institution’s profile and broadened access to higher education in the Lango sub-region.
Addressing the new students, the Lira City Resident City Commissioner, Emmy Lawrence Egole, challenged them to embrace responsible leadership and take an active role in identifying and solving challenges within their communities.
“You are not just here for certificates; you are here to become problem solvers. Work closely with university authorities and your fellow students to find practical solutions to issues affecting your welfare and academic progress,” Egole stated.
He also urged students to make full use of the university’s sports and recreational facilities, highlighting their role in nurturing talent, instilling discipline, and fostering teamwork—all of which contribute to the holistic development of both the university and the wider Lango sub-region.
In her remarks, the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Associate Professor Judith Abal, assured the new students of the university’s readiness to support them throughout their academic journey. She encouraged those facing academic or personal challenges to seek timely guidance from her office and other relevant departments.
“Do not suffer in silence. We have support systems in place to help you navigate any difficulties and ensure a smooth and successful academic experience,” Prof. Abal advised.
The Lira University Guild President, Benedict Arac, also welcomed the freshers, calling on them to respect the institution’s rules and regulations. He emphasized the importance of discipline, mutual respect, and responsible decision-making throughout their time at the university.
Lira University has recorded consistent growth in student enrolment, having admitted 3,320 students in the 2025/2026 academic year, up from 2,345 the previous year. University leadership views this upward trend as a positive opportunity to expand access to higher education while equipping young Ugandans with the knowledge, skills, and values essential for national development.
