Lango Cultural Institution Partners with Ernest Cook University to Offer Health Sciences Scholarships

LIRA, UGANDA — In a major boost to regional higher education and healthcare development, the Lango Cultural Institution (LCI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ernest Cook University to provide annual academic scholarships for students across the Lango sub-region.

The official signing ceremony, held at the Lango Cultural Center, establishes a five-year agreement designed to ease financial barriers for local youth pursuing careers in the health sciences.

Key Highlights of the Agreement

• 60 Total Beneficiaries: 12 students annually over a five-year period.

• Financial Support: Each year, the university will award 2 full scholarships and 10 partial bursaries.

• Target Field: Specialized degree and diploma programs in health sciences.

• Future Expansion: Potential to increase the number of awards based on early outcomes.

Investing in Healthcare and Regional Development

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ernest Cook University spokesperson Faray Joseph emphasized the institution’s commitment to community-driven investment and educational access.

"This partnership reflects our dedication to investing in the bright young minds of the Lango sub-region," Faray stated. "By reducing the financial burden of university tuition, we want to give talented students the freedom to excel without financial hardship. Over time, this initiative will strengthen education outcomes and help tackle poverty across the region."

Faray added that depending on the success and impact of the initial five-year cycle, Ernest Cook University is open to increasing the number of annual awards in subsequent years.

A Continuing Legacy of Community Education

Welcoming the initiative, LCI’s Minister for Education and Culture, George Ojwang Opota, praised Ernest Cook University as a center of academic excellence and urged local youth to seize the opportunity.

"This partnership represents a substantial investment in the future of our youth and the healthcare infrastructure of our community," Ojwang said. "We encourage eligible students from across Lango to apply and use higher education as a tool to transform their lives and serve their communities."

Ojwang highlighted that education remains a central priority for the cultural institution. To date, LCI’s educational support initiatives have helped over 2,000 students enroll in and successfully graduate from tertiary institutions across Uganda.

How to Prepare

Details regarding the application window, eligibility criteria, and selection process will be announced jointly by the Lango Cultural Institution Ministry of Education and Ernest Cook University admissions offices ahead of the upcoming academic intake. Prospective applicants are advised to prepare their academic transcripts and proof of residency within the Lango sub-region.
