One Dead, Community Protests After Police Vehicle and Motorcycle Collide in Apac

APAC, Uganda – A man died on Monday night after his motorcycle collided with a police patrol vehicle on the outskirts of Apac Town, an incident that briefly sparked protests from community members near the Central Police Station .
The crash occurred at approximately 8:15 PM on July 6, 2026, at Centre C, about one kilometer from Apac CPS. According to North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the patrol vehicle, registration number UP 00150, was returning from Akokoro Sub-county where officers had been deployed on official duty.
Preliminary police reports indicate the motorcycle, a blue Bajaj Boxer with registration UDY 956S, was ridden by an as-yet-unidentified male boda boda rider. "The motorcycle knocked the left tyre of the vehicle while joining the main road," SP Okema explained.
The motorcyclist sustained fatal injuries from the impact and was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has been taken to the Apac General Hospital Mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination and identification by relatives.
Community Reaction and Police Response
The fatal crash triggered agitation among some local residents. SP Okema confirmed that "some members of the community became agitated and pelted stones at the Police officers." Security teams responded to manage the situation, and no further incidents were registered after the initial disturbance.
A senior police team responded immediately to the scene, including the Regional Police Commander, Regional Traffic Officer, Regional Police Spokesperson, and the officer in-charge of the Police Standards Unit (PSU). Their mandate included documenting the scene, inspecting the vehicles involved, and overseeing the investigation.
Both the police vehicle and the motorcycle have been towed to Apac CPS and are scheduled to be inspected by the Inspectorate of Vehicles as inquiries continue.
"Our condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time," SP Okema stated.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision are ongoing.
