Arson Attack in Oyam Destroys Two Houses, Targets Village LC I Chairperson
Two residential houses belonging to Ader Village LC I Chairperson Odoch Edward were burnt down in a suspected retaliatory arson attack in Oyam District on 23rd July 2026. The attack occurred hours after the Chairperson received threats linked to his involvement in the arrest of a cattle theft suspect. Four suspects, including Okaka Peter, have been arrested as police intensify investigations.

OYAM, North Kyoga — Police in the North Kyoga Region have launched an investigation following an arson attack that destroyed two residential houses in Ader Village, Ader Parish, Otwal Sub-county, Oyam District.
The attack occurred in the early hours of 23rd July 2026 at approximately 12:34 a.m., targeting the homestead of Mr. Odoch Edward, 64, the LC I Chairperson of Ader Village. Unknown assailants deliberately set fire to four houses at the complainant's residence.
Despite immediate intervention from family members and neighbours, only two of the four houses were saved from the inferno. The blaze consumed property including four bags of soya beans, two sacks of maize, kitchen utensils, and various farm tools.
Investigation Points to Retaliation
Preliminary investigations suggest the attack may be linked to the Chairperson's official duties. Police report that Mr. Odoch was involved in the arrest of Okaka Peter in June 2026 on suspicion of cattle theft.
Following that arrest, the LC1 Chairperson received threats from members of the suspect's family. Mr. Odoch later informed police that individuals linked to the suspect had been observed surveying his home. Investigations into those threats were reportedly ongoing at the time of the arson.
According to a witness statement, several suspects were allegedly overheard on the night of the incident discussing plans to burn the Chairperson's houses.

The case of arson has been formally registered, and statements have been recorded from the complainant and other witnesses.
Police Response
The scene was examined by DPC SP Ayikoyo Sydney, alongside the Scene of Crime Officer, detectives, and uniformed officers.
"The Uganda Police Force strongly condemns acts of arson and all forms of criminal violence," the police statement read.
"We urge members of the public to remain calm, cooperate with investigators, and refrain from taking the law into their own hands as investigations continue. Further updates will be provided as investigations progress."
