LIRA CITY – UPC President Jimmy Akena came out with all guns blazing on Saturday, directly targeting President Yoweri Museveni and his government during the official launch of the party’s manifesto in Lira City.
In a passionate address, Akena did not hold back in his condemnation. He blamed the NRM government for what he termed as “systematic failure” in key sectors, including healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
“For over three decades, we have been promised prosperity and transformation,” Akena declared. “But what we see are crumbling health centers, underpaid teachers, and roads that are impassable for a large part of the year. The people of Lango and Uganda at large deserve better than empty promises.”
“Mr. Museveni has failed this country,” Akena asserted. “He has failed on his own promises. He talks about peace and stability, but what peace is there when our youth have no jobs? What stability is there when corruption eats away at our national treasury?”
The son of former President Apollo Milton Obote, Akena positioned the UPC’s new manifesto as the antidote to the nation’s woes. He emphasized that the document draws from the party’s rich history and offers a pragmatic plan for good governance, economic revival, and social justice.
“The UPC is back, and we are ready to lead,” he proclaimed. “This manifesto provides the roadmap out of the misery that the NRM has subjected Ugandans to. We are reclaiming the soul of this nation.”
The choice of Lira City for the launch was symbolic, aiming to reignite the flame of UPC support in the Lango sub-region and send a clear message to the central government that opposition voices remain strong and organized.
