Lira, Uganda – A delegation of five secondary schools from the Lango sub-region is set to represent the area at the upcoming national science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) exhibition in Kololo, Kampala.

The schools—St. Katherine Secondary School, Father Aloysius Secondary School, Bar Secondary School, Dr. Obote College, and Comboni College—secured their spots after emerging as the top performers at the Regional Management Committee (RMC) Science Competition. The regional contest was held at Lango College and saw participation from eleven government secondary schools across the region.

The announcement was made by the RMC Chairperson, Canon George M. Okwee, who confirmed that each qualifying school will be represented by two students at the national event. He highlighted the significance of the competition in fostering a culture of innovation among learners.

“The competition provides learners with an opportunity to showcase their scientific innovations, exchange ideas with students from other regions, and develop practical skills in science and technology,” Canon Okwee stated.

The achievement marks a historic milestone for some of the participating institutions. Morish Okunu, Headteacher of Father Aloysius Secondary School in Bala Town Council, expressed his pride in the students' performance, noting that it is the first time both his school and Bar Secondary School have qualified for the national competition.

“This is a major milestone for the two schools. I urge our students to be disciplined and act as good ambassadors for their schools and the Lango region,” Okunu said.

Echoing the call for discipline and focus, Isaac Ocoo, Headteacher of Lira Secondary School, encouraged the students to maximize the learning opportunity. “Use this experience to strengthen your knowledge in science and innovation,” he advised.

The event also drew calls for systemic improvements to science education. Lira City Education Officer, Canon Jane Acio Obeny, urged educators across Lango to prioritize STEM subjects, citing the government's strategic investment in science and technology for national development.

“The Government of Uganda is investing heavily in science and technology to drive national development,” Obeny noted.

She further challenged the RMC leadership to investigate the non-participation of certain schools in the regional contest and to develop strategies for broader engagement in future editions. She concluded by wishing the qualifying students success and reminding them to uphold discipline to make Lango proud.

The national STEM exhibition is an annual event that brings together Uganda's most promising student innovators to display projects designed to promote practical skills and advancements in the critical fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
