LANGO – Lira Diocese is set to celebrate 58 years since its creation with a thanksgiving event on Saturday, 11th July 2026, to honor God for His enduring work in the Lango Sub-region.
Speaking to our reporter on Tuesday, 7th July 2026, Mr. Julius Peter Ogwang, Chairperson of the organizing committee, confirmed that all preparations are underway to ensure the celebrations are both successful and memorable.
According to Ogwang, the event will serve as a solemn day of gratitude, reflecting on the great achievements the Diocese has registered over nearly six decades since it was founded in 1968.
“The celebrations will bring together people from all backgrounds, regardless of tribe, religion or culture. We are all united in Jesus Christ,” Ogwang said.
He appealed to the public to turn up in large numbers to make the day a resounding success and to uphold the spirit of peace and unity throughout the proceedings.
Historical Background
Lira Diocese was created on 12th July 1968 after it was carved out of the then Gulu Diocese, marking a pivotal moment in the ecclesiastical history of Northern Uganda. Over the years, the Diocese has grown to become a spiritual cornerstone for the Lango Sub-region, championing not only faith-based initiatives but also community development and social welfare.
The Bishops who have shepherded the Diocese include:
-
Bishop Ceaser Asili
-
Bishop Joseph Oyanga
-
Bishop Joseph Franzelli, Emeritus
-
Bishop Linos Wanok – Current Bishop
Each of these leaders has contributed to the Diocese’s legacy of resilience, service, and spiritual growth, navigating the community through both challenging and prosperous times.
A Call to Unity and Gratitude
In his remarks, Julius Peter Ogwang reiterated the inclusive nature of the upcoming celebrations, emphasizing that the event transcends denominational and ethnic lines.
“We are asking all Christians and well-wishers to come and celebrate with us. This is a time to thank God for what He has done for Lira Diocese in 58 years,” he said.
The thanksgiving ceremony is expected to draw thousands of faithful from across the Lango Sub-region and beyond, with a program that includes mass, testimonies, cultural performances, and a fellowship luncheon.
As the Diocese prepares to mark this historic milestone, the faithful are encouraged to reflect on the journey of faith, resilience, and divine providence that has sustained the Church for 58 years, while looking forward to continued blessings in the years to come.
