LIRA CITY – A new Regional Centre for Culture will be built in Lira City, the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development announced today.

The government, through the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, has unveiled plans to construct a state-of-the-art Regional Centre for Culture in Lira City, a move hailed as a significant step towards preserving the cultural heritage of the Lango sub-region and beyond.

The minister emphasized that the centre is envisioned as a hub for cultural activities, education, and economic empowerment. “This centre will be more than just a building. It will be a home for our traditions, our music, our dance, and our history,” Minister hon. Betty Amongi Akena told the gathered local leaders, cultural elders, and artists. “Our goal is to create a focal point where the young generation can learn from their elders, where our artists can showcase their talents, and where we can preserve the rich cultural identity of the Lango people for generations to come.”

The proposed centre is expected to feature several key facilities, including:

  • A modern museum and archives for preserving artefacts and historical documents.

  • A performing arts theatre for music, dance, and drama productions.

  • Training halls for skills development in traditional crafts and contemporary arts.

  • A resource library dedicated to Lango and Ugandan culture.

Local leaders and cultural enthusiasts at the workshop welcomed the news, expressing hope that the project would spur economic growth.

“The establishment of this cultural centre is a dream come true,” said one of the cultural elders present. “It will not only safeguard our heritage but also attract tourists, create jobs for our youth, and give our artists a permanent platform. We pledge our full support to the government to ensure this project becomes a reality.”

The minister concluded that the workshop was a critical first step to gather input from the community, ensuring the final design and function of the centre truly reflect the needs and aspirations of the people it is meant to serve. A technical committee is expected to be formed to oversee the planning and implementation phases of the project.
