Kampala,Uganda|President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has issued a major directive affecting all schools in Uganda.
According to the new order, no school will be allowed to operate or receive an official license if it does not have a playing field.
The announcement has sparked widespread discussion among educators and parents across the country.
Museveni explained that playing fields are crucial for the development of children.
Sports and outdoor activities help students stay healthy, learn teamwork, and build discipline. Without proper spaces for recreation, schools fail to provide a balanced education.
This directive is expected to lead to significant changes in school structures.
Many institutions may need to invest in building or expanding playgrounds to meet the new requirements. Those that fail to comply could see their operating licenses revoked, affecting both private and public schools.
The education ministry has been tasked with enforcing the new rule. Inspectors will visit schools to check if they have adequate playing fields. Schools that do not meet the standard may be given a deadline to improve, while others could face immediate closure or denial of licenses.
Parents and community leaders have reacted to the news with mixed feelings. Some welcome the directive, believing that children need proper spaces for physical activity. Others worry about the financial burden this could place on small private schools that struggle to afford land or sports facilities.
As the government begins implementing this directive, schools across Uganda are expected to evaluate their facilities.
The coming months may see a surge in investments in playgrounds and sports infrastructure, marking a new era in the country’s approach to education and student welfare.
