Luuka District-In a clear pre-election appeal, First Lady and Minister for Education and Sports, Maama Jennet Museveni, has called upon all eligible Ugandans to vote for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to preserve the nation’s peace and secure its future.
The First Lady’s statement, released through official channels, framed the upcoming elections as a critical choice for the nation’s trajectory.
“As we approach the elections, I encourage every Ugandan of voting age to choose the path that secures our peace and advances our country,” Mrs. Museveni was quoted as saying. She explicitly urged citizens to “turn up and cast our votes for the President and for the NRM leaders, so that the stability we enjoy today can continue to anchor Uganda’s future.”
The message emphasizes “stability” as the central achievement of the NRM government, led by her husband, President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986. This appeal aligns with the ruling party’s long-standing campaign narrative, which positions itself as the sole guarantor of peace and development, often contrasting this with the pre-1986 eras of political turmoil.
The First Lady’s direct involvement in the electoral process is seen by political analysts as a strategic move to mobilize the party’s base and appeal to undecided voters, particularly women and youth, by associating the NRM with national security and continuity.
The statement did not address specific policy platforms of the NRM or acknowledge the agendas of opposing political parties, instead focusing on a broad endorsement of the status quo.
As the campaign season intensifies, this high-profile endorsement is expected to further galvanize the political landscape, with opposition groups likely to counter the “stability” message with calls for change and democratic reforms.
