Soroti,Uganda|Vice president of the republic of Uganda Maj Rtd Jessica Rose Epel Alupo has argued media houses to spread rightful information about the government plan to compensate people affected by the Karamojong cattle raids in Teso sub region.
Speaking at the commissioning of Soroti regional blood bank, Alupo reassured the public of the government commitment to fulfill the compensation pledge and argued journalists to act as responsible messengers in sharing accurate and positive information.
Alupo said once the wrong information is shared the whole people can be affected that means the information must be in uniformity.
The State Minister for Northern Uganda, Dr. Kenneth Omona, has announced that the government has held its first consultative meeting with a committee tasked with auditing the progress and process of cattle compensation in the Acholi region and the same team are waiting for lango and Teso.
This move follows a directive by President Museveni aimed at addressing numerous complaints from the public regarding the compensation process.
The government had previously allocated Shs 150 billion to compensate war debt claimants in the Acholi, Lango, and Teso sub-regions for cattle lost during past insurgencies.each sub-region is expected to receive Shs 50 billion.
The Minister for Finance, Matia Kasaija, revealed that Shs 200 billion was required to compensate all people in regions that lost their cattle, but the ministry allocated Shs 50 billion in the 2021/2022 budget for compensation.
The government’s efforts aim to provide justice and relief to the affected communities, revitalising the livestock sector and promoting economic recovery in the region.
